Species: MARIALITE Locality: Piper Mtn. - Whiteface Trail, Gilford, NH Specimen Size: 5 mm field of view with glassy, columnar zone of marialite Field Collected: Tom Mortimer (Oct. 2010) Catalog No.: u1207 Notes: This glassy, columnar, zone is similar to the EDS analyzed NH display specimen. Both are from the Belknap mountains geologic environment. An EDS analysis of this specimen also indicated the marialite species. EDS analyst stated: "Intermediate Scapolite towards the Marialite end." In the plot, the Ca peak is greater than the Na peak, suggesting the meonite species. However, the sodium (light element) response is greatly attenuated by the EDS instrument, resulting in the assessment that the specimen is more towards the marialite end of the scapolite series. Marialite is the sodium rich member of the scapolite mineral group. The red zone in the lower left is the tip of a micro-mineral pointer marker. |
